What a great 4th of July weekend we had...Happy Belated!! I hope you
all enjoyed yourselves and are continuing to, preferably in the comfort
of an air conditioned space because the dog days of summer have
definitely arrived.
As the weather heats up, it is bringing us closer to NCRA's annual
convention in Chicago. This year I am really looking forward to it
because not only is the conference always fun and a great way to meet
and/or catch up with fellow court reporters from around the country,
but The Windy City is one of my all-time favorites. So much to do and
see...not to mention eat and drink. Good times! If any of you are
planning to attend, please drop me a line at lamoreira@comcast.net. Hopefully we can get together to have a drink or explore the city.
Of course I know that many of you may not make the trip, and that is
why it is important that you understand the following information. On
August 5th there will be a vote held regarding a change to the bylaws
along with the usual election of new officers and directors. A few
years ago it was made possible for members to exercise their right from
the comfort of their own home if they were not attending in person.
This is truly a wonderful feature for those of you who want to utilize
it, and I hope you will avail yourselves of it.
On Page 14 of the June 2010 JCR you will find the proposed language changes and each respective rationale. You can also view them here . In an attempt to give you as much information as possible to make a well-informed decision, here
you will find the answers to some pertinent questions directed at the
prospective officer and director candidates. It is very interesting
reading, and since it directly pertains to the future of the profession of court reporting, I hope that you will take a few minutes and review it before the election.
Each and every one of you who is a member in good standing with NCRA has a voice in this process. However, you must have a valid email address on file with the association by July 15, 2010 in order to receive your ballot. Call NCRA today at 1.800.272.6272 or send an email to misc@ncrahq.org if there is any uncertainty in your mind about their ability to contact you.
Ultimately, it is an individual decision whether or not to vote, but I
feel that I would be remiss in my duties as your president if I did not
bring this to your attention as it will affect us all going forward.
The ability to express ourselves in this manner is the most basic and
fundamental right we have as American citizens, and coming off the
holiday we just celebrated I hope you will make it a point to check
your email in the afternoon/early evening of August 5, 2010 (check your
spam folder if you do not see it in your inbox) and utilize this tool.
Polls will be open for a 12-hour period following the Annual Business
Meeting, which is scheduled to end at 11:00 a.m.
I wish you all the best, and please contact me at any time...I am always listening.
